Hermès Birkin vs Kelly

Handles and how each bag is carried

The handle count is the quickest way to tell the two apart. A Birkin has two handles and is carried by hand or in the crook of the arm. A Kelly bag has one handle on top of the flap and comes with a shoulder strap that can be removed, so the same bag can be carried by hand or on the shoulder.

In daily use that makes the Kelly bag the more adaptable of the two when you need your hands free, while the Birkin behaves like a structured tote that stays on the arm.

Closure and opening

Both bags close with a flap and a turn-lock, but the arrangement differs. On the Birkin, two straps come over the flap and fasten over the turn-lock plate, and many owners leave them unfastened for quicker access. On the Kelly bag, a single strap crosses the flap and fastens with the turn-lock.

Each bag comes with a padlock and keys held in a small leather bell called a clochette, which usually hangs from a handle.

Where the names come from

The Birkin is named after Jane Birkin, the English actress and singer, and Hermès introduced it in 1984. The Kelly bag takes its name from Grace Kelly, the actress who became Princess of Monaco and was photographed carrying the design. The Kelly shape is the older of the two and was originally sold under a different name.

The Kelly Dépêches and the Kelly To Go carry the Kelly name, but they are separate products, not versions of the Kelly bag.

Which one suits you

Choose on use. If you want a bag you can wear on the shoulder, the Kelly bag's strap settles the question. If you prefer a tote that opens wide and is carried by hand, the Birkin fits better. Hermès makes both in several sizes, leathers and colours that it does not list online, so a sales associate is the source for what is offered in your country.

Availability often decides as much as preference. Buyers commonly report that a boutique offers whichever of the two it has for a client at the time, and Hermès has not published how those offers are made.

Buying either bag

Neither bag can be bought from Hermès online. What actually appears online

The Hermès online store sells other leather bags, each with its own handles and closure. If the Kelly bag's shoulder strap is what draws you, the Evelyne, Herbag, Halzan and Jypsière are listed with shoulder straps; if you prefer a bag carried by hand, the Picotin has two short handles and no strap. The Lindy offers both handles and a strap.

None of these is a substitute for a Birkin or a Kelly bag, and we do not present them as one. They are the Hermès bags that actually reach the online store, and they sell out quickly when they do.
