What is a Hermès quota bag

A quota bag is a buyers' term for the Hermès bags said to be limited per client, most often the Birkin, the Kelly bag and the Constance. Hermès has never published a quota, so everything known about it comes from buyer accounts. This guide separates those reports from what can be checked.

Where the term comes from

"Quota bag" is not a term Hermès publishes: it does not appear in the Hermès online store or in any policy Hermès has made public. The phrase grew up among buyers, on forums and in resale circles, to describe bags that a boutique is said to offer each client only occasionally, however much the client wants one.

Which bags count is not fixed either. The Birkin and the Kelly bag appear on every list buyers give; the Constance is often added, and some buyers include certain exotic leathers or special editions. The lists change from one source to the next because they are built from experience rather than from a rulebook.

What buyers commonly report

Four themes run through most buyer accounts. Each is described below as buyers tell it, without figures, because Hermès has confirmed none of them.

A limit per client

The most repeated claim is that a boutique offers one client only a limited number of quota bags over a given period. Buyers disagree on both the limit and the period, and some say the practice differs between countries. A specific number quoted online is one person's experience, not a rule you can plan around.

Purchase history, or pre-spend

Many buyers describe being offered a quota bag after building a history of purchases in other categories, such as ready-to-wear, shoes, homeware or jewellery. This is usually called pre-spend. Other buyers report offers after little or no history. There is no official ratio or threshold, and nobody outside Hermès can tell you what amount leads to an offer.

Wishlists and requests

Some buyers say their sales associate records the bags they would like and calls when one arrives; others were told their boutique keeps no wishlists. The consistent thread in these reports is that a clear but flexible request, with more than one size or colour, is easier to match than one exact combination of size, leather, colour and hardware.

Identification and resale

Buyers also report being asked for identification when buying certain bags, and boutiques declining clients they suspect of buying to resell. Like everything else in this section, this is practice described by buyers, and it varies by store.

What is known for certain

Three things are not in doubt. Hermès does not sell the Birkin or the Kelly bag in its online store: our monitoring has not recorded either since it began on 29 May 2026. Hermès has published no quota, pre-spend or wishlist policy. And much of the rest of the Hermès bag range, from the Evelyne to the Picotin, is sold online with no purchase history required at all.

That last point is easy to miss. If you want a Hermès leather bag rather than one particular model, there is an open route: the online store, where the obstacle is timing rather than a relationship with a boutique.

What actually appears online

The Hermès online store regularly lists bags that buyers do not treat as quota bags. We record the Evelyne, Lindy, Picotin, Garden Party and Herbag across the storefronts we monitor, and their model pages show the official dimensions, prices, leathers and colours.

The Constance is the edge case. The Constance 18 and 24 bags have not appeared in our monitoring, while the Constance To Go and Constance Slim, both small leather goods, do appear online. Among Kelly items, the Kelly Dépêches has appeared and we track the Kelly To Go wallet, but the Kelly bag itself has never been listed.
