How to buy a Hermès Birkin

A new Hermès Birkin at retail price is bought in a Hermès boutique, when a sales associate offers you one; it is not sold in the Hermès online store. The other route is the resale market. This guide explains both honestly, and shows which Hermès bags you can actually buy online.

Can you buy a Birkin online from Hermès?

No. The Birkin is not listed in the Hermès online store. We monitor hermes.com across the storefronts we support, and since our monitoring began on 29 May 2026 we have not recorded a single Birkin there. The same is true of the Kelly bag. A listing that presents a new Birkin as sold online by Hermès should be treated as a scam.

It also means Fairy bag cannot alert you to a Birkin, and we do not offer Birkin alerts. Our alerts cover the models that Hermès does list online, such as the Picotin, Evelyne and Lindy.

What the Birkin is

The Birkin is a top-handle bag named after the actress and singer Jane Birkin, and Hermès introduced it in 1984. It has two rolled handles, a front flap held by two straps that pass over a turn-lock, and a padlock with keys kept in a small leather bell called a clochette. Hermès itself began in Paris in 1837 as a harness workshop.

Hermès makes the Birkin in several sizes, leathers and colours, but none of them appear on hermes.com, so there are no official product pages to take dimensions or prices from. For that reason we do not list Birkin sizes or prices on this site.

Buying a Birkin in a Hermès boutique

A Hermès boutique is the only place Hermès sells a new Birkin. Buyers commonly report that Birkins are rarely on open display and that a sales associate offers one to a client, often privately, when a bag arrives that suits what the client has asked for.

Hermès has not published who receives an offer. There is no published waiting list, spending requirement or limit per client. What circulates instead is buyer experience, and it differs between countries, between boutiques and between associates.

What buyers commonly report

Several patterns come up again and again in buyer accounts. Clients say it helps to return to the same boutique and the same sales associate, to be clear about the sizes, leathers and colours they would accept, and to stay flexible, because one exact combination may never arrive. Many describe being asked about their other Hermès purchases first.

Before you visit

Go with a realistic request: more than one acceptable size, a few colours you would genuinely use and an open mind about hardware. Ask the boutique how it handles leather goods requests, because some Hermès boutiques in some countries use appointment requests and others serve walk-in clients. Practice varies by store and by country.

Buying a Birkin on the resale market

Resale is the quickest way to own a Birkin, and the price reflects that. Auction houses, consignment shops and online resellers sell used and unworn Birkins, usually above the Hermès retail price. The premium depends on the size, leather, colour, hardware and condition, and it moves with demand.

Checks before you pay

Counterfeits are the main risk. Buy from sellers that authenticate every bag and state that in writing, ask whether the original receipt is available, and read the return policy before paying. A new Birkin offered close to retail by an unknown seller is a warning sign, and so is a request to pay by bank transfer outside the platform.

Be just as careful with anyone selling boutique access, quota spots or a place on a Birkin list. Hermès does not sell access to its bags through third parties, and paying for such a promise buys nothing from Hermès.

What actually appears online

The Hermès online store does sell leather bags, just not the Birkin or the Kelly bag. Models we record regularly include the Evelyne, Picotin, Lindy, Garden Party and Herbag, and the Evelyne appears far more often than any other line we track.

Restocks are brief. Hermès does not announce when stock arrives, and a listing can sell out within minutes, which is why buyers of these models rely on alerts rather than refreshing the site.
