The Herbag is a Hermès bag made of canvas and Hunter cowhide, sold online as the Herbag Zip in sizes 20, 31, 39 and cabine, and as the Herbag Messenger 39. UK prices start at £2,170 for the Zip 20. The Zip 20 and Zip 31 are the versions that appear online most often.
What is the Hermès Herbag
The name is usually explained as a contraction of ‘Hermès’ and ‘bag’. Unlike most Hermès bags, the Herbag is not an all-leather design: every version on hermes.com pairs canvas with Hunter cowhide. Hermès describes Hunter as 100% vegetable tanned, thick and dense, with a very firm hand, and suited to flap structures, fastening cords and straps, which is how it is used here. The canvas body is often described as detachable, so it can be swapped for another.
The canvas changes from version to version. Hermès product pages list Militaire, Officier, H Berline, H Viking and Criss Viking canvas, a Herbag Zip 31 laque in Officier canvas with lacquer, a Herbag Zip 31 pocket, and a cabine size in H Plume canvas. Hardware comes in palladium plated or yellow gold plated finishes. We could not confirm colour names for the Herbag from the product pages, so this page has no colour list.

Herbag Zip 20
The Herbag Zip 20 measures 20.5 × 16.5 × 7 cm, the smallest Herbag on hermes.com, and comes with a 104 cm strap with snap hook. At 7 cm deep it holds essentials rather than a day’s worth of things. It was listed in H Viking canvas and in Militaire canvas, both with Hunter cowhide, at £2,170 in the UK, which makes it the lowest-priced Herbag we have data for. Along with the Zip 31, it appears online far more often than the Zip 39, the Messenger 39 or the cabine.
Herbag Zip 31
The Herbag Zip 31 measures 30.5 × 25.5 × 11 cm and has a 95 cm strap without snap hook. It is the size with the most versions: the standard Zip 31 in Militaire, Officier or Criss Viking canvas at £2,390, in H Berline canvas at £2,500, the Zip 31 laque at £2,650 and the Zip 31 pocket at £2,990, all UK prices. The Criss Viking version was also priced at €2,440 in France and ¥512,600 in Japan, and the Militaire version at $3,525 in the US.
Herbag Zip 39
The Herbag Zip 39 measures 39 × 33 × 14 cm: 8.5 cm wider, 7.5 cm taller and 3 cm deeper than the Zip 31. Hermès lists a 95 cm strap, the same length as on the 31. The only version in our reference is Militaire canvas with Hunter cowhide at £2,550, just £160 more than the Zip 31 in the same canvas. The 39 appears online far less often than the Zip 20 and Zip 31, so the gaps between listings are longer.
Herbag Messenger 39
Despite the number in its name, the Herbag Messenger 39 measures 36 × 28 × 9 cm, smaller than the Zip 39 in every direction. It has a 100 cm strap. It was listed in Militaire canvas and in H Viking canvas, both with Hunter cowhide, at £3,080 in the UK and $4,550 in the US, which makes it the most expensive Herbag with a UK price. In our records it is rarely seen online, so it is a version to set an alert for rather than check by hand.
Herbag Zip cabine
The Herbag Zip cabine is the travel size: 50 × 34 × 22.5 cm with a 100 cm strap, and more than twice as deep as the Zip 31. The only version we found was on the French store, listed as the Sac Herbag Zip retourné cabine in H Plume canvas with a Rayures d’Équipage motif and Hunter cowhide, at €4,450. We have no UK price for it. It is the Herbag we have seen online least often, so it suits a buyer who can wait for a rare listing.
Hermès Herbag prices
Every Hermès country store has its own price list with taxes included, so figures in different currencies do not line up with exchange rates. On the Herbag the canvas and finish change the price as much as the size does: a Zip 31 costs £2,390 in Militaire canvas but £2,990 as the pocket version. Most prices we found are for the UK; French, Japanese and US prices exist only for some versions.

The Herbag is sold through hermes.com, and all five versions have appeared online during our monitoring. Most appearances are the Zip 20 and Zip 31; the Zip 39, Messenger 39 and cabine show up rarely. Whichever you want, listings are not announced in advance and can sell out within minutes, so speed after a restock decides whether you get one.
In a Hermès boutique
Hermès boutiques carry the Herbag from their own stock, which is separate from the online store. A sales associate can check what that store has, but Hermès publishes no rules on who can buy which bag, and stock in one boutique tells you nothing about another.
On the resale market
On resale sites the Herbag is common, including earlier versions of the design. Canvas shows wear at the corners and base, so ask for close-up photos of both, check that the bag has been authenticated, and compare the price with the Hermès figures above before paying.
