What Étoupe looks like

Étoupe is a mid-toned taupe: brown with a clear grey cast, darker than a stone beige and lighter than a chocolate brown. It has no strong red or yellow warmth, which is why it is usually grouped with the neutrals rather than with the browns. The name is French, and étoupe is the word for tow, the coarse fibre left over when flax or hemp is combed.

Because it sits between two colour families, Étoupe is easy to misjudge from a single photo. Étoupe is a colour name, not a leather, and the lines it was listed for are made in several different leathers. Hermès describes Taurillon Clemence as semi-matt with a generous, irregular grain, Togo as matt with a round, irregular grain, and Swift as almost smooth with a delicate shine.

A grained, matt surface and a smoother, shinier one catch light differently, so Étoupe on one leather will not look exactly like Étoupe on another.
